Wild Iceland Expedition: West Fjords and the Eclipse

A real expedition into the untouched wilderness of western Iceland with Andrea, nature guide, and Roberta, travel creator. We'll set out from Reykjavik toward the icelandic Western Fjords by 4x4, kayak, and foot, immersing ourselves in Iceland's most remote natural area and exploring its geology and pristine environment. The expedition culminates with the total solar eclipse of August 12th — a once-in-a-generation event.

TRIP PURPOSE

Emotion, exploration, challenge, hiking.

This trip has been designed with the following principles:

  • Off-the-beaten-track exploration
  • Science and nature
  • Responsible tourism

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Where the roads end, the journey begins
The Westfjords are not the Iceland you know from postcards. To reach them, we’ll cross the heart of Iceland by 4x4, then continue on foot and across icy waters by kayak and local boats, far from the standard routes, towards the part of the country that most travelers never get to see.
  • Into the wilderness: the Western Fjords
The heart of this journey is an adventure-expedition made of trekking and kayaking through Iceland’s most remote natural region: fjords, waterfalls, cliffs, and coastlines that are difficult to reach, impossible to forget.
  • The awe of raw nature: an active volcano and the Solar Eclipse
The final day is a climb toward something extraordinary: hiking across the lava fields of Fagradalsfjall, one of Iceland's most active volcanoes, then witnessing the total solar eclipse of August 12th from a remote, wild place - an event that won't repeat for generations.

Note: The official language of this trip will be Italian, but some activities may take place in English. We will travel by car and on foot along roads and trails of varying difficulty. Bring your adventurous spirit and get ready for landscapes that look straight out of a science fiction movie!

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Reykjavik
Base camp for the night. We meet in the late afternoon in Reykjavik, get settled, and head out to acclimatize. Dinner together and expedition briefing.

Day 2 - Kerlingarfjöll and the Highlands
We set off! We load the 4x4s and take the F-roads into the Icelandic interior: gravel tracks, river crossings, and landscapes you won’t find in guidebooks. By afternoon we reach Kerlingarfjöll, where we’ll go on a hike among these mountains with their unreal colors.

Day 3 - Kerlingarfjöll and the Hveravellir Hot Springs
The morning is dedicated to Kerlingarfjöll again: in the morning light the landscape changes completely, and it’s worth exploring it once more. In the afternoon we get back in the 4x4s and continue toward the northern fjords along the highland tracks, stopping along the way at the natural hot springs of Hveravellir.

Day 4 - Into the Westfjords
We drive north, finally entering the Westfjords along a scenic road where mountains plunge straight into the sea and tiny villages are scattered along the coastline. We may stop in Drangsnes for a soak in the seaside hot pools: geothermal baths facing the ocean, one of the best ways to get into the spirit of the fjords.

Day 5 - Along the Fjords to Ísafjörður + Kayak
Back on the road, this time hugging the jagged fjord coastline. Iceland through a windshield is already spectacular — but in the afternoon we leave the car behind and get on the water. Kayaking along the coast of Ísafjörður: the most direct way to understand the scale of this landscape.

Day 6 - Hiking and Dynjandi Waterfall
We explore the surroundings of Ísafjörður with a few panoramic hikes: trails that quickly climb above the sea and open up wide views across the fjords. We then continue to Dynjandi, probably the most spectacular waterfall in the Westfjords: a series of cascades that spread out like a fan down the mountainside.

Day 7 - Off-road to Rauðisandur
Back in the 4x4s for one of the peninsula's most extreme off-road loops: cliff-edge driving, technical sections, views that stop you in your tracks. In the afternoon we reach Rauðisandur — a rust-colored beach at the end of a valley that feels like it belongs to another world. We sleep in tents, with the sound of the ocean.

Day 8 - Látrabjarg + Flatey
Morning on the beach, then a move to the cliffs of Látrabjarg: the westernmost point in Europe, puffin colonies at arm's reach, wind in your face. In the afternoon, ferry to Flatey — a tiny island with a handful of colored houses, no background noise, and a pace that doesn't exist anywhere else. We sleep at the island's campground, as guests of the owners.

Day 9 - Flatey + heading south
Last morning on the island. Anyone who wants can go out by boat or kayak; anyone who prefers can just slow down. Then ferry to Stykkishólmur and on the road south. The adventure isn't over yet.

Day 10 - Fagradalsfjall + Solar Eclipse
The most intense day of the trip. Trek on Fagradalsfjall, one of Iceland's most active volcanoes — recent lava fields, lunar landscape, ground that reminds you how alive this place is. And then, weather permitting: total solar eclipse. An event that happens once in a generation, on an active volcano, in Iceland. Final dinner together.

Day 11 - Back to Reykjavik
Expedition complete. We load up the cars, drive back to Reykjavik, and say goodbye.
