TRIP PURPOSE
An exploration centered on discovering the Abruzzo National Park and its inhabitants, among flora and fauna, rediscovering the slow rhythms of forests and animals. A different kind of Easter, following the tracks of large predators often misunderstood in their majesty. With this journey, we hope to spark awareness and responsibility toward the biodiversity that surrounds us, through the approach of attentive and curious observers reflecting on the necessary coexistence between humans and nature.
The journey thus becomes an experience of awareness-raising, bringing participants closer to the deep value of mountain ecosystems, the importance of protected areas, and the essential role that wolves and bears play in maintaining natural balance. Walking through their territories means observing the mountains with a new perspective, questioning our way of being in nature, and understanding that its protection is born from listening, respect, and knowledge of those who have inhabited and safeguarded these places for millennia.
This trip is for you if you want to learn more about:

ACCOMODATION
During our journey, we will stay at Albergo Gemma, in San Sebastiano dei Marsi, a tiny village of just 150 inhabitants nestled in the upper Valle del Giovenco, at the edge of the Abruzzo National Park. Situated at 1,120 meters above sea level and surrounded by forests and silence, it is the perfect base for our excursions into the wilderness.
The available rooms are double rooms, only 6 of which have separate single beds, all with private bathrooms. They are simple, welcoming, and authentic. For those who prefer greater privacy, it is possible to book a single room with a total supplement of €60 (€20 extra per night).
The in-house restaurant, La Taverna, continues a culinary tradition passed down from mother to daughter, offering typical Abruzzese dishes prepared with seasonal local ingredients. It is a place where you truly feel at home, where nature can be tasted in every dish.
IMPORTANT INFO
The difficulty level is medium/easy, suitable for those who enjoy walking in nature.
The meeting point is in Pescasseroli at 3:00 pm, at the Ecotur office on Via Piave 9. This is where the activities of the journey will begin. Pescasseroli can be reached by car via the A24 Rome–Pescara highway, exiting at Pescina and continuing toward Pescasseroli. It is also possible to arrive by train to Avezzano on the Rome–Pescara line and continue by bus, or reach Pescasseroli directly by coach from Rome. For those arriving from southern Italy, the reference station is Castel di Sangro, followed by a bus connection to Pescasseroli.
The hikes involve moderate distances and limited elevation gain (an average of 200–300 meters of elevation gain per day), but a basic level of fitness and comfort with walking in natural environments is required. Proper equipment is essential, including hiking boots, waterproof and windproof clothing, a backpack, water bottle, headlamp, hat and gloves, and binoculars. ITINERARY
Day 1: getting acquainted with the forest
We begin the journey in the early afternoon with arrival in Pescasseroli and a meeting with the guide at the Ecotur headquarters. From here, an introductory walk will set off inside the monumental Bosco della Difesa of Pescasseroli, a natural setting of great value, characterized by a wide variety of habitats and the presence of numerous wildlife species. This first hike will be dedicated to exploring the area, reading the landscape, and observing the traces left by wild animals. In the evening, we will transfer to the hotel for check-in and room assignment. The day will end with dinner and an introductory presentation of the journey, designed to introduce the activities and experiences of the following days.
Day 2: the valley and the bear
The second day begins with breakfast, followed by a new excursion that will take us into the evocative Cicerana Valley, one of the most intact and silent environments in the Park. The walk crosses the ancient beech forest of Selva Moricento, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where centuries-old trees and rarefied atmospheres tell an ancient story of natural balance. After lunch at a mountain refuge, the afternoon will be dedicated to a particularly moving moment: a hide for observing the Marsican brown bear, a symbol of the territory and a discreet presence in these mountains. At the end of the experience, we will return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay, carrying with us the impressions of an intense day deeply immersed in nature.
Day 3: humans and wolves, a complex coexistence
The third day begins in the first light of morning, when the silence is broken only by the sounds of the forest, for an attempt to spot wolves in their natural environment. After breakfast, the experience continues with a hike in the Valle dell’Atessa and Coppo della Polinella area, a wild and little-frequented territory, ideal for grasping the most authentic essence of the Park. Lunch will be packed, enjoyed within the mountain landscape. In the late afternoon, we will return to the hotel, followed by dinner and overnight stay, concluding a day rich in emotions and encounters with true wilderness.
Day 4: reading nature and its landscapes
The final morning once again begins at dawn, with a new attempt to observe wolves in their natural environment, taking advantage of the quietest and most evocative hours of the day. After breakfast, we will set out on a hike in the Valle del Giovenco, a wide and luminous area offering striking views and another opportunity to read the Apennine landscape. Lunch will be packed, immersed in nature. Return is scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by departure and the conclusion of the experience.

Paolo was born and raised in Pescasseroli, in the heart of Abruzzo, where he still lives today. As a passionate local guide, he loves to “walk” through nature, history, art, and literature. During his journeys, he always seeks to connect with the “deep soul” of the places he explores. He loves meeting people along the way, listening to and sharing stories, discovering traditions, and understanding the local way of life. For him, wild Abruzzo is the result of a millennia-old coexistence between local communities and an untamed nature made of bears and wolves. Yet, every now and then, he also enjoys walking alone through “his Abruzzo,” to renew and strengthen that deep bond that ties him to this land.
