Urban Green City
Join Urban Pills, a collective of science communicators focused on urbanism, on a journey to Freiburg to explore one of Europe’s most advanced models of sustainable cities and understand how urban planning can become a concrete tool to transform the way we live in and experience cities.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Discover how a sustainable city really works:
This is not just theory. We will walk and cycle through neighborhoods, infrastructures, and public spaces that show how a city can be designed to be more inclusive, livable, and low-carbon.
- Learn urban models you can replicate:
From mobility to neighborhoods, from sustainable buildings to public space management, this trip offers concrete examples and practical insights you can bring back and apply in other urban contexts.
- Experience the city as an open-air laboratory:
Freiburg is not just a destination — it is an ongoing urban experiment. Spending several days in the city allows us to observe how urban choices truly shape everyday life.
TRIP PURPOSE
The purpose of this trip is to understand how sustainable urbanism can drive real transformation in cities, placing people, the environment, and quality of life at the center. This journey is an act of urban activism: it is designed to educate conscious citizens, professionals, and changemakers by providing tools to critically read urban spaces and imagine alternative, more sustainable models that can be replicated in their own contexts. Freiburg becomes a living laboratory where public policy, urban planning, and innovation come together to reduce environmental impact and generate positive outcomes for communities.

ITINERARY
Day 1 – Arrival and first look at the city
The journey begins in the early afternoon with a group meeting in Freiburg. We will start with an exploratory bike ride through the historic city center, observing how a medieval city has evolved by integrating soft mobility, public spaces, and urban livability. We will move through streets, squares, and main axes to read the urban structure and understand how the city balances tourism, residential life, and quality of life. The visit to the University Library will serve as a first concrete example of how contemporary architecture and sustainability goals can be integrated. The day ends with a vegetarian dinner in the city center, offering a first taste of Freiburg’s sustainable culture.
Day 2 – Markets, mobility, and urban infrastructure
The day begins with a visit to the Münstermarkt, to observe the role of local markets in urban life and in the sustainability of food systems. We will then explore Freiburg’s public transport system through a dedicated visit, to understand how mobility, planning, and public policy work together to reduce reliance on private cars. In the afternoon, we will visit the Green Industry Park to explore how industry can be integrated into the urban fabric without compromising environmental goals. The day concludes with an exploration of the Rieselfeld district, a model of urban planning that combines density, green spaces, and services.
Day 3 – Vauban and community-oriented urbanism
This day is dedicated to the Vauban district, one of the world’s most well-known case studies in sustainable urbanism. We will analyze how urban design, building choices, and public space management support low-impact lifestyles. We will observe the role of car-free streets, renewable energy, and community-oriented design. We will also explore sustainable hospitality examples to understand how tourism and accommodation can be integrated into a neighborhood designed around environmental and social principles.
Day 4 – Public space, urban green, and resilience
This day focuses on public spaces, urban parks, and green infrastructure. We will explore how Freiburg uses urban green to improve air quality, reduce heat islands, and create spaces for social interaction. We will analyze the role of landscape in urban planning and how green spaces are treated as essential infrastructure rather than decorative elements. This day is designed to reflect on how cities can become more resilient to climate change.

Booking Info

Ready to go? Just the usual doubts?
How do I know if a trip is confirmed?

We use a simple classification to inform you about the availability status of each trip:
"To Be Confirmed": the trip hasn't received any bookings yet but is active.
"Group Creation": the trip has received some bookings and spots are filling up. The trip is active.
"Confirmed": the trip is confirmed and only a few spots are left.
"Sold Out": tickets for that specific trip date are sold out.
"Closed": the trip is no longer active.
What is the average age of participants? Are there age limits?

Participants are generally between 22 and 45 years old, with an average age of 30-35. There are no age limits: we accept minors (with legal guardian consent) and people over 45. However, consider the type of trip, as some activities may require good physical condition.
Is the flight to the destination included in the trip?

With ORMA flights are not included: you get to choose where and when to depart. Want to travel with the group or extend your trip? No problem! Arrive a few days earlier or stay longer to make the most of your destination. We’re here to help you find the best flight option — just message us on WhatsApp!
What are the exact arrival and departure times?

Our trips typically start around lunchtime or early afternoon, with departures in the same timeframe. However, times may vary depending on the destination. We remain flexible so everyone can plan accordingly. If you arrive late or need to leave early, just let us know in advance.
Is vegan/vegetarian food available? What about celiac disease?

Absolutely! Many of our coordinators and participants are vegetarian or vegan, so we always choose restaurants with suitable options. Our trips can also accommodate celiac disease, as long as we are informed in advance. The same applies to any allergies or intolerances.

For long-haul or non-European trips, confirmation happens at least 1.5 months before departure. If the trip isn’t confirmed by then, it will be canceled. For shorter trips, confirmation happens 3-4 weeks before departure. You’ll receive an email once the trip is confirmed, along with a link to the Telegram group to coordinate logistics with other travelers.
Can I travel with the creator? What transport does the creator use, and from where?

Yes! If the transport type, departure station, and schedule are already set, they will be listed on the trip page. If not, we’ll share this information in the Telegram group once the trip is confirmed.
