Searching for Rare Elements
Join Eva Munter (@chimica_in_pillole) on an adventure to the center of the Earth!
Dive into the heart of Sweden, a nation at the forefront of science and sustainability. From breathtaking hikes to innovative workshops and the legendary Ytterby mine, you'll explore the roots of chemistry and the impact of scientific discoveries on our world.
TRIP PURPOSE
An analysis of the role of chemistry in the transition to a more sustainable future. A way to reflect on Sweden's model for a world powered by innovation and clean energy.
This trip has been designed based on the following principles:
- Promotion of the local economy
- Environmental and social education
HIGHLIGHTS
- A journey through science (and Sweden)
This is not your average city break. While Stockholm is our base, we’ll travel to Ytterby and Uppsala—two iconic places that shaped the world of science. Expect trains, tunnels, and a touch of periodic-table magic. - Ytterby: Where the Periodic Table Got a Makeover
Buried in a quiet Swedish village is the mine that gave the world ytterbium, yttrium, terbium and erbium. It’s where chemistry legends were born—and where we’ll walk in their footsteps. - Chemistry is the real protagonist
From rare earth elements to Nobel discoveries, this entire trip is a love letter to science. Whether you’re a STEM nerd or just curious about the invisible forces shaping our future, this journey is for you.
Fun note: This trip speaks Italian, with a splash of English for select activities. Pack your hiking boots, your curiosity, and maybe a periodic table—because when rare elements meet rare adventures, the results are unforgettable!

ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival in Stockholm
Arrive in Stockholm by the evening and meet your fellow travelers and your guide, science communicator Eva. Settle into your accommodation, get to know the group, and prepare for an inspiring journey through the scientific and sustainable soul of Sweden.
Day 2: Ytterby and the Elements That Changed the World
Venture just outside the capital to Ytterby, home to the legendary mine that gave its name to several elements on the periodic table. Take a guided hike through this historic site and dive into the fascinating world of rare earth elements—their crucial role in green technologies, and the environmental and ethical challenges they pose. A perfect blend of chemistry, history, and outdoor exploration.
Day 3: Museums, Minerals, and the Spirit of Discovery
Spend the day at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, exploring its rich exhibits on mineralogy, geology, and the natural world. Step into the immersive Cosmonova dome for a cosmic experience that blends science with storytelling. In the afternoon, visit the Nobel Prize Museum, and end your day wandering through the magical streets of Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s old town.
Day 4: Uppsala – Where Knowledge Grows
Take a short train ride to Uppsala, one of Sweden’s most storied academic cities. Walk in the footsteps of Carl Linnaeus at his former lab and garden, visit the Gustavianum Museum, and explore the Uppsala Observatory. This day is a tribute to centuries of Swedish contributions to scientific thought and discovery.
Day 5: Goodbye and Final Reflections
After breakfast, reflect on the scientific insights and shared experiences of the trip with Eva and the group. After the morning session, enjoy a free afternoon to explore on your own or with your fellow travelers.

Eva is an organic chemist with a special mission: to take science beyond the confines of laboratories and academic textbooks, making it accessible and captivating for everyone. From this vision, "Chimica in Pillole" was born, a project that turns science into storytelling—a virtual window through which chemistry becomes simple and engaging. On Instagram and YouTube, Eva takes her audience on a journey through the elements of the periodic table, uncovering their unique properties while weaving together stories and curiosities. Because behind every symbol and number lies a whole world waiting to be discovered.
